Can’t Lose Weight? Get Over Yourself

As I’m maneuvering through a difficult season of my life right now, it has me spending more time in solitude and prayer—isn’t it funny how trials cause you to turn inward?

During my quiet time with the Lord the other day—after what felt to me like an intimate moment of vulnerability and transparency, pouring out my heart to God, lamenting over all of my woes and worries, entreating God to fix all that was wrong and needed to be fix, I heard a voice say,

“Get over yourself!”

Say what??!! . . . not what I was expecting to hear. I wanted to hear how God was going to fix the situation and make it all better.

Honestly, I don’t know whether it was God’s voice or my own, but it made a strong impression on me and I went to Scripture to seek confirmation.

As I sought God to find out what ‘get over yourself’ really meant, I was led to this scripture:

“You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

I didn’t get it at first. After all, I say this Scripture all the time in reference to healthy eating and exercise, but I could not see how it applied to what I was going through.

The more I reflected on it, the more I believe God was showing me that I needed to stop focusing so much on myself.

  • Stop making everything about me.
  • Stop being held hostage by my own worries and fears.
  • Stop obsessing about my needs, my hurts, my pains, my suffering—it’s not about me!!!

Yikes!—kinda harsh, I thought. But after I let that digest, I realized it was 100% true.

Yes, I have needs, wants, and desires, but if I let them dominate me, they will give in to their incessant hunger for more, and never feel satisfied.

God was and is showing me that my entire Christian walk with all it’s trials and setbacks is not about my comfort, but about bringing glory to Him. He’s asking me if my habits, actions, and thoughts reflect Him in good times and in bad times? Or when the going gets tough, will I revert back to protecting ‘me’ at all costs?

This journey is not about, “Lord, I will trust you when things are going well, but when they’re not, I’ve got to take care of myself.” That’s not trusting—it’s convenience.

So for today, I’m choosing to look at my situation and circumstances in light of who God is in me. I’m choosing to offer this day as a form of worship to Him in spite of what’s going on around me.

Where’s Your Focus?

Now it’s time to shine the spotlight on you. Maybe you’re frustrated with your weight loss journey and keep asking God to ‘fix’ you.

  • Is your journey solely about losing weight? If so, you’re going to be very disappointed because God wants you focused on so much more than a number on the scale. He wanted to develop all of the fruits of the spirit in you.
  • Is God calling you to ‘get over yourself’ and focus more on Him?
  • It’s good to have goals and to want to lose weight and get healthy, but does this consume you? Does it take up most of your waking hours? The word tells us that we can’t serve two masters ( Matt. 6:24.)

I get it … I’m also guilty of obsessing over things, especially when I can’t see the answer or solution.

But let me ask you this. Has it helped the situation at all?

If despite all of your worrying and agonizing about your weight and you’re still feeling stuck, it’s time to do something different. This quote is overplayed but it still remains true:

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”

Let’s stop this madness!

As I take my eyes off my problems and focus on the Lord, I invite you to do the same.

Stop wasting your time worrying about your weight loss and give it to God. He will give you the discipline, strength, courage, wisdom, strategies, or whatever you need to help you move from where you are not, to where you want to be.
