How Long Will I Need Training Wheels?

The other night in our Breakthrough Training Call, a member said she was surprised that I still considered myself in the ‘training’ stage of my health and weight loss journey.

The training stage is what I refer to as the stage in our health journey where we still need to rely on tools such as:

  • tracking your food on ‘myfitnesspal’, ‘loseit’, or some other food tracking app
  • counting calories or carb intake
  • needing to rely on fitness trackers like ‘Fitbit’
  • needing accountability groups to keep us motivated
  • creating lists of forbidden foods
  • setting reminders for ourselves to pray

Please hear me, there’s nothing wrong with any of these tools, but they are not how I want to live the rest of my life, and I don’t think you do either. (Unless you get excited about tracking your food—then more power to you).

I consider these tools ‘training wheels’ that we need to teach us how to do what we were naturally designed to do.

We were naturally designed to be in good health–to eat when we’re hungry, and to stop when we’re full.

We were created to be in constant communion with God and reflect His glory.

Unfortunately, we overrode our hunger signals, so we don’t know how to stop eating when we’re full.

We’ve second-guessed the voice of the Holy Spirit, so we no longer know if it’s God talking to us or the burrito we ate for dinner last night.

And daily pressures have convinced us that we don’t need to take breaks or spend some time in nature. So we forgot what it feels like to frolic and have fun in the outdoors and play like we did when we were children.

Social media has taught us that we don’t need real relationships when we can Facebook ‘likes’ to gauge our self-worth, when deep down inside so many of us are lonely and sad but no one would ever know.

So that’s why we need ‘training wheels.’

We need to learn how to get back in alignment with who God says we are.

We need to practice healthy habits until we master them, not in our own strength, but learning to lean on the Lord.

We need to learn how to retrain our brain to only believe what the Word of God says about us, and not what society says.

We need to learn that we are not defined by the number on the scale, or what size jeans we wear.

We need to train our taste buds to crave foods that will heal, satisfy, and nourish our bodies.

So until I master these skills, I’ve still got my ‘training wheels’ on.

I’m nowhere near where I used to be a few years ago, but I still have a long way to go.

I still have the occasional binge, but now it lasts days instead of months.

I still get frustrated every once in a while when I step on the scale and I don’t weight what I think I ‘deserve’.

I believe I will get there.

I know I will get there by the grace of God.

Each day I continue to see the vision that I’ve created for myself (this is a powerful exercise we do in Breakthrough) manifested a little bit more in my life and it feels wonderful.

I want my health journey to bring me freedom, peace, and joy and not feel like a bunch of rules and ‘to-do’s.’

How about you? Are you longing to get past the calorie counting? The yo-yo dieting?

Do you wonder if you’ll ever be able to eat the occasional dessert again without going on a bender?

It is possible my friend; it will take hard work, discipline, and learning how to lean on the Lord. But it will happen for you too.

This was such an incredible email. There is so much in it to think about. It is rich in truth and i really yearn for that truth to be fully realized and I walking in it.

This was so powerful. I know I will rely on my training wheels for awhile, but prayerfully I will get to where I need them less and less. I’m already seeing some improvements, but I’m a work in progress. Thanks so much for sharing this.
