How to Get in Alignment with God’s Design for Your Health

Get in Alignment with God's Design for your Health

What does it mean to be healthy? Good health means freedom. It’s the ability to enjoy the activities of everyday life without feeling encumbered or limited. When we are healthy, we’re not taking a multitude of medications, we are not consumed by pain and have plenty of energy for whatever the day brings.

Healthy people are not consumed with what they should eat; stressed about how many calories are in their foods, or obsessed about tracking their carb count. They eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re full. Physical activity is a natural way of being that is interspersed throughout the day. It does not need to be tracked on a Fitbit or on a StairMaster. God created us to be in good health–in fact, we were created to be in excellent health!

So what happened to us? Why has our health fallen so low on our priority list? How did we manage to stay so far from our divine, perfect design?

Here’s why…When you’re not in alignment with who God says you are, you will align with who the world says you are!

Throughout our lives, there are many reasons why we’ve fallen out of alignment:

1.  Our past failures take us out of alignment

When we try something and fail once, twice, or maybe multiple times, we tell ourselves that maybe we don’t have what it takes; we were never meant to achieve this goal; or that it’s impossible. These lies are based on fear and are not in line with what God says about us.

Unfortunately our words become our habits and our habits become our reality, so what was once a lie has now become our truth and we live each day as if that lie is an actual fact.

2.  The draw of the world has taken us out of alignment

The health industry has build a trillion dollar industry around selling us lies. Fat is bad! Sugar is good! Low-fat products are good for you! Artificial sweeteners are safe! A healthy body should look like ‘x’! You can lose weight by sleeping if you use this product! You can melt the fat away! You don’t need to exercise if you eat a healthy diet! The less you eat, the less you will weigh! And the lies go on and on. The more we are seduced by the lies, the more we will fall out of alignment with God’s truth.

3.  Our fears keep us out of alignment

There’s a popular expression, ‘the truth hurts’. For example, it’s easier to say that we will exercise later than to face the truth that we could be lazy. It’s easier to tell ourselves that we have no choice, than to face the truth that we have to be grown up and make responsible choices. And it’s easier to say that one bite won’t hurt than to face the truth that a spirit of gluttony resides in us.

All of these lies that we tell ourselves are rooted in fears. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of rejection, and the list goes on.  When we live in fear, it’s impossible to align with God because fear and faith can not operate in the same mind.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love”. 1 Jn 4:18

4.  The enemy pulls us out of alignment

I hate to even mention this one because we give the enemy a lot more credit than he deserves, but there are unequivocal circumstances where the devil does mess with us and try to keep us from what God has for us. Fortunately and unfortunately, the devil only has as much power as we give him.

So now what? Knowing that there are so many factors that take us out of alignment with God’s perfect design for our health, how do we get back in line?

There are 5 steps to this process that we teach in our Healthy by Design Program. Today I’m going to talk about the most practical one that you can do immediately–‘renewing your mind and spirit through your thoughts and actions’.

REVEAL – Allow the Holy Spirit to Reveal to you, the real root of the problem.

RELEASE – Learn to let go and Release the underlying problems to God.

RENEW – Renew your mind and spirit through your thoughts and actions

REHEARSE – Rehearse daily consistent action steps.

REMAIN – In faith and action – it’s an ongoing process.

How to get in alignment with God’s design for your health by renewing your mind.

Step 1. Identify the thoughts that are taking you out of alignment

This will take some work because the thoughts are often multi-layered and can be cloaked in lies from the enemy. So first identify what the surface issue is, but also write out other truths you might identify after stating the initial thought.

Some of the thoughts could be:

  • I can’t do it
  • This is too hard
  • It’s not working
  • I’m too busy/stressed/old

STEP 2. Pray and search the scriptures for answers to your issue

Revelation without confirmation becomes nothing more than rationalization and justification for our own ‘bad’ behaviour. The Bible will provide an answer to every challenge, stronghold, problem, circumstance or situation we face, but only if we take the time to search for it. Don’t settle for what you think ‘God said’. Always seek confirmation. God will always use scripture to confirm His direction and intentions for you and your life.

Here are some scriptures that I’ve selected (in prayer) that I will apply to my issue(s). I have searched for issues about temptation, entitlement issues, self-esteem issues, and about finding joy, peace, and fulfillment.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet he did not sin”.  Heb 4:15

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Cor 10:13

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Gal 5:22

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jer 1:5

Mark 10:35-45 addresses entitlement issues.

A couple of resources I use to do this are: http://biblehub.com and http://www.openbible.info/topics/.

STEP 3. Continue to apply God’s Word to your issue

This last step is to continually apply God’s truths to your habits and thoughts. Not once or twice, but continually. Not when it’s convenient or on a really bad day, but consistently.

Satan’s lies are so convincing that we must continually apply God’s Word over and over again until we believe His Word more than we believe the lies. When you stop believing the lies, then you know you’ve received your breakthrough.

When we stop and change our thoughts dead in their tracks, then we will know that we are renewing our minds. “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Cor 10:5b

Beloved, it IS possible to get back in alignment with God’s design for our health. You can live the life of abundance, joy, peace, and freedom that Christ died for us to experience. With God, all things are possible!

Until Next Time,

Thank you for reminding me of what I know is God’s truth. I have struggled with the challenge this week, but I am holding on to God’s Word. I know that it is not by might nor by power, but by his Spirit. I speak His truth today. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me. Now thanks be unto God, which always causes us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. Thank you for 1 John… Read more »

Thank you.

I have gained unwanted weight in the past year and cannot stop beating myself up about it. It is consuming me.
On top of that I don’t seem to have the willpower or strength to loose it.
I live in constant conflict every day – it is robbing me my daily peace and joy.

Thank you for 1John 4:18

Every blessing
