Success Spotlight ~ Ena G.

My struggle with extra weight began about 36 years ago—that’s the age of my son. I gained 40 pounds when I was pregnant with him and have been battling it ever since. It’s been a yo-yo ride.

I topped off 60 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight, only losing weight once to where I really felt I was at a healthy weight because I hadn’t instilled the good health habits that would keep it off.

The attached photo shows me at my highest weight of 205. I don’t look like I’m my healthiest self there, do I?

My more current photo shows me on vacation last October at around 180 pounds. I think I’m looking healthier and happier being closer to good health! I’m currently at 178.4 and plan to reach my goal weight of 150 by the end of this year.

My weight seems to come off slowly so I often feel like I’m setting goals and not reaching them. Since the beginning of March, my goal is to release 3 pounds per month for the next 10 months.

I’ve been a member of Healthy By Design (the new ‘Weight Loss God’s Way’) since January of last year. I feel as if I’ve been peeling off layers of mental and emotional baggage along the way. I’ve had so much to learn.

Although releasing weight has been slow, the amount of knowledge I’ve gained about who I am deep down, and my relationship with the Lord has grown tremendously! It has been very helpful for me to have a vision, to set priorities, and to know what my values are. When I go back to these they put me back on track.

There are two areas of the program that have been most helpful to me.

The first was the “Eat, Pray, Think This Challenge”. In this challenge, I learned ways to stop toxic thoughts that I’ve had for years. One is by performing an action to demonstrate that I’m stopping the thought and going in a new direction; another is to recite a positive scripture verse in place of the toxic thought. This helped me a great deal with learning verses from God’s Word.

The second thing I have loved is to select a word for the year and create WordArt around it. Last year my word was CONSECRATED. This year God has given me the word BEST.

I think of two things with this word. The first is God’s BEST for me (Jer. 29:11, “For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.”

The second is to ask, “Am I really giving Him my BEST?” My scriptures for that focus are II Cor. 5:9, “Therefore we have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him”—this is my driving ambition; and I Cor. 10:31,So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

My sisters, I am giving you these encouraging words … DO NOT GIVE UP!

Days of discouragement may come, but learning how to lose weight and be the healthiest we can take time. Sometimes it takes more time than we thought it would. The Bible tells us to persevere and to be steadfast. Personally, I’m seeing how very stubborn I’ve been about wanting things my way … slow learner!

But on the positive side, I’m seeing progress in all my goals: releasing weight, more joy than ever in my relationship with my husband and with the rest of my family, being the best nurse manager that I can be for my employer, and feeling rooted and strong in a new church home. This is the result of perseverance!

Romans 8:37, “In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”
