Pace Yourself – It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

I started off the new year on fire–getting stuff done and checking things off my list. I was like a woman on a mission. And then when February 1st hit, I felt so burned out. One day, I didn’t even want to get out of bed. I also noticed my sweet cravings increase because I needed a pick-me-up. So I reverted back to my old ways of coping—sugar. I even rationalized to myself that one treat each day won’t hurt. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I noticed the weight slowly start to creep back on, even though I was working out 4-5x per week.

In January, I was so fired up with what God wanted me to do this year, but somewhere along the lines I sprinted ahead of him. I came out from under His covering and protection and tried to do things in my own flesh. How do I know? Because I didn’t make it very far on my own. Our life journey with God is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires proper pacing, training, and REST periods.

What I continue to learn is that God did not design us to sprint through life; and He did not create us to live life apart from Him (John 15:4-5). He created us be in constant communion and relationship with Him. Like the Israelite’s journey to the promised land, He longs to lead, guide, and protect us (Exodus 13:21).

So if you’re feeling burned out, like there’s not enough time in the day to get everything done, that’s because you’re probably doing things that God did not call you to do.

If you’re feeling over stressed, it’s time to give the reigns back to God. God is never in a rush. He wants us to work with urgency, but he does not want us to work ourselves to exhaustion. If you’re exhausted, like I was in January, it’s your own unrealistic expectations or will that’s driving.

God calls us to live in peace (Isaiah 26:3)–not chaos, stress, or drama.

He promises to do our heavy lifting, so at the end of each day, week, or month, we should not be feeling burned out or exhausted (Matthew 11:29).

I’ve since come back in alignment with God. I’ve given Him back control of my life and have repented. I realize the folly of trying to do things in my own strength and I’ve naturally began to eat within my boundaries again (yes, they’re connected).

Will you join me in turning your schedules back over to God, and let him order your steps. Spend time in the morning in prayer, and let Him into your day. Before you write out your to-do list for the day, ask God what HIS plan is for you. Who does He want you to speak to or bless. How does He want you to glorify Him? Then just breathe, feeling His peace as you go about your day.

When you can start each day like this you will not feel overwhelmed and stressed out. You will feel healthy and energized and you will not feel the need to turn to food for comfort. Best of all, when your head hits the pillow at the end of each day, you will hear God’s voice saying to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matt 25:23).
