Progress, Not Perfection

Holy Cow! And just like that . . . poof! The first month of the new year is over.

How did you do?

I must admit that I did better than I did last year but I’m way off where I thought I would be.

My journey reminds me of this famous poem by Portia Nelson.

“I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.

I am lost . . . I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

I walk down another street.”

To sum it up for me, sometimes I still fall in the hole and get out immediately, sometimes I walk around it, and I’m learning to walk down another street every once-in-a-while, but I often find myself back on the same street.

Does this sum up your journey?

I would love to hear from you,

[…] Last week, I shared a 3 step approach to renewing your mind. I truly believe that renewing your mind is foundational to your breakthrough in your health and in all other areas of your life. Your battle with your weight is first lost or won in your mind. […]

Great post, Cathy. I especially like your comment that we need to “continually apply God’s truths our habits and thoughts. Not once or twice, but continually. Not when its convenient or on a really bad day, but consistently.” Amen!

Hi Cathy, this is a really good lesson. I am sitting here trying to identify my stumbling blocks and then I am going to search the scriptures. Thanks again.
