Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Over the years, I have tried many weight loss programs: WeightWatchers, calorie-counting, MyFitnessPal, walking, 21-Day Fix, etc. I lost 50 pounds on one of these programs, but the weight came back. I tried the program again and could not seem to stay committed enough.

About three years ago, I weighed 207 pounds. I was praying for God’s help in losing weight. God has always been an integral part of my life, so why was I struggling so much? God showed me it was because I was not allowing Him to be involved in my health.

What happened next can only be described, as a friend calls it, as a Godcidental. A search for a Christian weight loss book led me to Cathy’s Weight Loss, God’s Way book. This book was what I was wanted. I wanted to do this His way. So I bought her book. Then I found out there was a website, so I signed up for my first class.

That was three years ago. Since then, I have taken several courses. I am not one of those folks who lose 30 pounds in 30 days. It wasn’t until just this year that I even started losing any weight. God has spent the last three years working on my heart and my mind. He has used Cathy to help me understand my relationship with food, the impact stress has on my weight, and how to change my thinking to lessen that impact, how to depend on God more and food less, and to have a more healthy relationship with food. I think the biggest concept that she helped me understand was the difference between my mind, spirit, and soul. That lesson was pivotal in my understanding of how I am to let the Holy Spirit lead my life instead of my emotions.

Recently, we did a Sugar Detox in June. I challenged myself and did the highest level of the detox. Unbeknownst to me (but not to God), I would be tested the following month for food sensitivity and was diagnosed gluten intolerant. So I had to cut gluten from my diet. Since I was doing the detox, I was already ahead of the game and could quickly tell the impact of eating any gluten. Without the detox, this process would have taken many months to convince me there was a difference.

As a result of the detox month, I have seen a dramatic change in my weight loss. At the beginning of June, I weighed 200. I currently weigh 187. I am grateful for this program and the godly encouragement of Cathy and her team. They never criticize me for not making dramatic progress all those years. They encouraged me and welcomed me and let God pour into me His love and grace as He changed me from the inside out. I know I am not where I plan to be. I also know I am nowhere near where I used to be, and I am not just talking about my weight.

I look forward to how God will continue to use Cathy and her team in my life as I continue this journey.
