I hear from so many women that weekends are a challenge. They do well during the week but on weekends they break all of their boundaries and end up binge eating and staying focused on the weekend is critical to your weight loss success. Today in our Haven group we committed to stay within our eating boundaries this weekend. We agreed with each other that if we did break our boundaries that we would renew our minds and reach out for accountability with each other. Why do we overeat on weekends?
I think it’s because of how we view weekends in our culture. We’ve developed a series of mindsets that govern how we operate on weekends:
1. ‘I deserve a treat’ mindset
Many of us are still using willpower to manage our diets and our health. We use food as our reward to get us through our week. This is dangerous thinking because we abandon all self-control and our weekend treat turns into a weekend binge fest.
Secondly, we believe that we’ve worked hard all week so we reward ourselves with food.
2. ‘Get it all done’ mindset
Most of us over schedule our weekends. It’s our time–laundry, housework, drop the kids off to their activities, cook, catch up with friends, all the church social activities, and of course, we’ve got to keep ourselves put together. That means squeezing in our hair appointments, and if we’re so blessed, nails. The consequence is that we’re so busy that we end up picking up McDonald’s in between all of our running around.
3. All or nothing mindset
This mindset is similar to our deserving mindset in point one. We believe that since we’ve worked so hard all week, we deserve to sleep in and our Saturday or Sunday are meant to be lazy days. Now there is some truth to relaxing and recharging on the weekends, but many of us take it to the extreme and essentially ‘waste’ the weekend. So when Monday comes, we’re back to the same rat race. The lazy Sunday is usually coupled with an after church brunch so the net result on the weekend is too little activity and too much unhealthy food.
These mindsets are due to wrong thinking and are also proof that we’re still relying on our own strength instead of submitting our health, our weight, and our agenda to God.
Regardless of what day it is, our goal is to glorify God everyday in our bodies, spirit and mind. It is not a Monday-Friday thing. We serve the same God each and every day so our weekends should not look that different than any other day. Total health is a way of life for us as Christian women.
Yes, this is easier said than done if you’ve been raised with these limiting beliefs and unhealthy mindsets. Reject these 3 limiting beliefs about the weekends so you can start to build new healthy weekend habits.
1. Reject the belief that you deserve a reward. If we got what we deserved, we would all be in big trouble! Instead, accept God’s grace and mercy towards us that he does not give us what we deserve; seek Him to help you manage your agenda and your eating on the weekend and trust Him for a greater reward than food.
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
2. Reject the belief that weekends are a time to run around like a chicken with your head cut off and get everything done. God has commanded us to have a Sabbath day of rest. In His infinite wisdom, we knows that when we do not recharge, we are not effective. When we’re tired and exhausted, we don’t make good decisions, we’re not motivated to get healthy, and we crave unhealthy pick-me-up foods like coffee and chocolate.
Take a day each week and unplug from all social media and electronic devices and use some time on the weekends to reconnect with God and your family.

3. Reject the belief that weekend socializing must revolve around food. Church potlucks (or should I say pot blessings), Friday night pizzas, and Sunday brunches will quickly sabotage all of your hard work during the week. Build in some physical activity and use the weekends to plan some healthy meals that you may not have otherwise had the time to prepare during the week.
