Weight Loss 2 Degrees at a Time

It’s the little things that you do that will have the most permanent and lasting results on your weight loss efforts.

Scripture to meditate on: “For who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10)

We often spend so much time looking for big dramatic changes—the perfect diet; the perfect workout; the latest program, that we ignore small little things that we can be doing each day to help us achieve our health and weight loss goals.

Sometimes, we’re so busy searching and looking for the once-and-for-all perfect solution, that we can sometimes forget to take the small steps that we should follow every day.

In his book, The 2 Degree Difference, author John Trent teaches his readers that it’s the small incremental changes in your life which can have a profound effect on your success.

The most successful changes happen in degrees and inches, incrementally and gradually.

John encourages his readers to develop a “small-step mindset” by reminding us that Jesus looks to reward those who have been “faithful in little things.”

Is there one thing that you could begin to do that would have a huge impact on your future success? Don’t worry if it seems insignificant. Take some time today and identify one or two small things that you can begin to do today that can gradually change your habits, your attitudes, and your weight.

Here are a few examples:

  • Begin drinking an 8 oz cup of water per day.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Go to sleep 10 minutes earlier.
  • Go for a 10-minute walk each day.
  • Cut out your morning muffin.

In our Weight Loss, God’s Way Programs, we practice this same principle—baby steps. We encourage our members to just change one small thing—no eating after 7; journal your food; exercise for 15 minutes—nothing life-changing. Yet these small changes will have a profound impact on your health and weight over time if you continue to practice them consistently.

There’s an old Chinese proverb that says, …

“To get through the hardest journey, we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping.”

So, dear sister, take that one step at a time, trusting God as your strength and don’t give up.

Yes I so agree. For me it is so much easier to change a small thing to get healthier habits and keep at it. then to try to change everything and after a short time give up.

One of my boundaries during WLGW was not to eat after 7 pm. Once I reached goal I have been stepping outside that boundary. I will begin to honor that commitment again.

I started this process at the first of 2019. I started tracking these changes on app so I could see my success rate. One of my ‘small changes’ was to do daily devotions with my Bible app. Through this, I did the 21 day WLGW devotion. I now have a 110 day streak in my Bible App and am SOOO much closer to God! YAY!! At the time and since then, I have also added about 8 other small things that I now do every day. Once you do them long enough, they are no longer a sacrifice and you’re… Read more »

[…] 7. Remember the principle of baby steps.  Even though we set long term goals, we achieve them one day at a time. Just think of 1 simple thing that you can do each day to improve your health. Don’t worry about making big sweeping changes to your lifestyle—ditch the super restrictive diet or insane exercise plan and just take it one step at a time. For more, read this post […]
