Are You Worshiping God, or the Number on the Scale?

“It is good that you take hold of one thing (righteousness) and also not let go of the other (wisdom); for the one who fears and worships God [with awe-filled reverence] will come forth with both of them.” Ecclesiastes 7:18

How often do you step on the scale?

I’ve seen both extremes. Some women jump on the scale several times per day, while others have not been on a scale in years. Which is right? Which is wrong?

Wherever you land on the spectrum, what’s most important is to understand that the scale is simply a tool to tell you if you’re moving in the direction … period!

Ecclesiastes 7:18 teaches us to avoid all extremes in life, but what’s even more important is the power you give to the scale. Does what the scales shows affect your mood in a positive or negative way?

Remember:

  • It does not determine your value or self-worth.
  • It does not mean that you’re a failure.
  • it should not be worshipped or idolized.
  • It should not determine your mood.

Once per week is a healthy guideline for weighing in, in most cases.

Ask yourself how much power the scale has over you.

Watch this 30-second video to see if you can identify with this scale scenario. Then, without judgment, share how often you weigh yourself.

I was just trying to watch it and make sure I didn’t gain more. While what I learned about fluctuations in weight was useful, I admit I could not get away from feeling better when the number was lower and feeling bummed out when it was higher. Even if I weigh once a week, that is still the case. Although, the work… Read more »

Oh my gosh, can i relate?!?! Stepping on the scale every morning sets my mood for the day. I love this verse . . . avoiding all extremes in life. Not allowing anything to have power over us such as the scale is an important lesson to remember. Not only do I have to continue with tracking so that it comes naturally and becomes a lifelong habit, now the next obstacle to tackle is NOT to step on the scale on a daily basis. Thank you Cathy!!
