Will You Allow God to Help You Accomplish Your Goals This Year?

Quick question? “Is your new year off to a good start?”

My question is a bit tongue-in-cheek because after over 35 years in the weight loss industry and from personal experience, I know that motivation quickly starts to wear off when things start to get real. Now it’s time to move from planning, visioning, and goal-setting to doing.

Are you a goal-setter or a goal-getter?

Goal-setters spend tons of time planning, getting excited about their goals, surfing the website looking for the perfect program, figuring out the perfect workout outfit, . . . but they never actually take action. They have more reasons for why they can’t start right now.

Goal-getters on the other hand, recognize that there will never be a perfect time or perfect diet. They do the best they can do. They don’t beat up on themselves for slipping up—even though they just started. They see setbacks, not as failures, but as opportunities to understand how they can continue growing and improving.

If you want to finally make a breakthrough in your health and weight loss goals this year, become a goal-getter instead of a goal-setter. Let go of the frustration and overwhelm that naturally accompanys trying to lose weight. If you’re a believer, (which I’m assuming you are since you’re reading this) then recognize that as frustrating as this journey might seem, you will never be able to force yourself to get healthier regardless of how many, ‘In the name of Jesus’ you put after it.

Remember Paul’s lament, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?”

The same is true for us today:

  • We are not able to accomplish our goals on our own
  • The process can feel frustrating and overwhelming
  • There will be seasons of self-loathing and condemnation
  • Our sinful nature will continue to fight against our deepest desires

So what can you do to make sure this year is different?

Like Paul, God wants us to come before Him in honesty and submit this journey to Him.

Paul’s response can also teach us how we are to respond to the frustrations that come along with managing our weight. He says, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:25.

Learn to respond with thanks to God. Thank Him for reminding you that He alone is the answer to every difficulty and frustration you encounter on your journey. He alone is the answer to feelings of laziness, sugar cravings, and even binge-eating. Everything will come into perspective after spending time with God and giving Him thanks.

Instead of making a laundry list of goals, resolutions, and actions for this year, let your MAIN GOAL be to seek your Father in everything you do. Instead of ‘trying to force’ yourself to eat right and exercise, seek HIM first (Matthew 6:33). Instead of figuring out the perfect program, the perfect app to track your food, or what your perfect meal plan will be this year, ask God for what you need (Matthew 7:7).

Refuse to keep getting ready to get ready but never actually doing anything about losing weight this year. In fact, right now, make YOUR FIRST GOAL to seek God in all you do and give Him thanks for a new year and what He will show you this year.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

Blessings,

I love this practical reminder of first bringing God unto my day and my life. THEN everything else will fall into place (be added unto me)!

The first 3 weeks of the year is always a good reset and reminder for me as our church does a 21 day fast. We seek God for the coming year in all areas of our lives. Weight release is one area for me. How do I accomplish this without over obsessing. Amen.
