How to set achievable weight loss goals

Do you set weight-loss goals? Do you achieve them?

I can’t remember the amount of times I woke up from a weekend or week-long session of binge-eating saying, “That’s it! This week I’m going to eat nothing but vegetables!” Well that usually lasted for about a day and then I would get too hungry and return to my old ways of eating.

I also remember the chocolate Ex-lax (major stomach cramping); the ‘Super-D’s’ dieters tea (even more stomach cramping); and the lemon-aid diet, a.k.a., ‘The Master Cleanse’ which was a  a concoction of lemons, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup in water for 10 days straight! It’s no wonder my metabolism was jacked-up for years.

We’ve all been there, whether it’s 10 or 200 pounds to lose, the desperation and frustration can become all-consuming. It costs us so much time, energy, and joy; not to mention, money, trying all the quick fixes and newest miracle cures. Although deep down inside we know it probably won’t work, we still believe for a miracle.

So let’s put this matter to rest right now. There are no quick fixes, there is no magic pills, and there will be no miracles when it comes to losing weight. Successful weight loss is a process that takes time and effort.

It’s been a long journey for me, and as I reflect back, it started with two things:

  1. Understanding that this was not really about weighting a specific number on the scale, but about my self-esteem, my self-worth and belief in who God says I am.
  2. Creating a clear path to help me understand how to change.

In our Weight Loss, God’s Way Challenge’, we start with helping you to set realistic weight-loss goals instead of making rash decisions like trying to lose 20 pounds in 10 days or something crazy that you know you can’t stick to.

If you have the habit of setting unrealistic weight-loss goals or if you’re looking for a simplified way to kick-start your weight loss, watch this funny, short video to learn how. If you’ve already participated in the 21-Day Challenge, then use this as a refresher.

Setting weight-loss goals will be easier when you follow the S.M.A.R.T. principle we outline in the video. Please share your goals in the comments below and I will give you some suggestions and pointers.

Have fun setting your weight-loss goals.
