Success Spotlight ~ Shirleyann S.

Most journeys don’t take that straight line like we hope. They are filled with hills and valleys and Shirleyann’s story is a prime example. She started off well and lost her focus. Now she’s courageously climbing her way back and is still committed to reaching her goal.

The fact that she has not given up on herself and is committed to still achieving her goal is why we’ve selected Shrileyann for this member spotlight!

I have struggled with my weight all my life. When I started this journey with WLGW in December 2017, I weighed 242 pounds. I lost 42 pounds within five months. I joined because I was tired of the many yo-yo diets from different places that were not working. I wanted to try a new approach from this program.

However, I gained back 30 pounds due to stress, overwork, and not following my plan. My goal is to lose an additional 100 pounds.

The world convinces all of us that we should be a certain size and that being a certain size would make us happy. We have bought into this delusion, but God has made us unique and wonderfully made! He always has a reason and a purpose for our lives. Now don’t get me wrong, we might think we will be happier being skinny, but I know plenty of happy overweight people including myself. However, for health reasons, and to be able to stop taking medicine for my diabetes and high blood pressure, I know I need to lose weight; also, I want to live longer, feel better, and allow my beauty to shine from inside me, as well as outside.

Since becoming a member of WLGW, I feel my relationship with myself has changed because I’m at the age where I need to take care of myself no matter what. I’ve always used food as an emotional crutch which has hindered my weight loss. I’ve never been a big eater, but I’m a snacker. I chose the wrong foods to snack on and made myself so busy that I never really had time to sit down and eat the right food. I allowed other obligations to take me away from eating the right foods.

The benefits that I have gained losing weight is that my blood pressure has decreased; my diabetes is under control; I feel I am able to do things with my grandchildren; I’m able to do more things with my friends, and I’m not tired and exhausted. The best benefit I received was improving my relationship with the Lord and knowing that if I fall, He is there.

Do you still fear that you will revert back to your old habits and mindset?

Yes, I do fear that I will revert back to my old ways, and I have. But I also get back on the horse. And as each day goes by, I’m progressing toward my goals. My mindset is to follow God and do it His way and not mine. I’m purposely trying to live righteously so I can enjoy the fruits of righteousness. I want to get to a place where I have joy in serving the Lord and do what is right for my health. I’m aware that I cannot live right for one or two days and expect God’s blessings to come to me. Enjoying the benefits of righteousness is not an act but a lifestyle.

What is your scripture that ministers to you on this journey?

Philippians 4:19 is the scripture I use during this journey. I acknowledge that without Him I am nothing. But in Him, with Him, and through Him, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

What advice/tips could you offer to your fellow sisters on this journey?

Psalms 18:20 says, “The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.”

As believers, we want to live clean so that we can pray that verse over our lives. He said in His Word that we are righteous. God is the keeper of our soul and is our Redeemer. We need to quit making excuses for our wrong behavior and come up another level. There is an anointing that God has for us. There is a higher level of the blessing that God has for everyone. There are resources God wants to bring into our lives, and this is what I would tell my fellow sisters on this weight loss journey: always keep the faith no matter what comes your way. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it in the end. Keep encouraging yourself, and never allow false truths to stop you.
