This morning I woke up feeling a bit discouraged. The Holy Spirit led me to a verse that immediately lifted my mood.
I’m so grateful for the power of God’s Word.
This inspired me to share the most powerful and encouraging scriptures that minister to me when I’m feeling discouraged or when I’ve broken my boundaries concerning my health.
After compiling my list, the sisters in our accountability group also shared some of their favorites.
I pray that these are a blessing to you, too.
13 Bible Verses to Help You Lose Weight
1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV – “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Sometimes, even when I’m well-intentioned, the temptation is so great it seems overpowering. This verse reminds me that I will ‘survive’ (without food or whatever the craving is) although it may not feel like it at the time. It also reminds me that God will give me the strength to get through it.
Psalm 118:24 NLT – “This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
I recite this simple verse every morning as soon as I wake up. It reminds me that I have a choice in how my day goes. I can choose to rejoice in everything, or I can choose to focus on my problems. I will rejoice even when I don’t make the best choices with my food or physical activity.
2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV – “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
So often controlling my thoughts feels like herding cats! I know that God wants me in good health, but my mind often tells me otherwise and my flesh seems happy to oblige my mind. It’s times like these when I have to take my thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ.
Psalm 37:4 (NIV) – “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
More than I would care to admit, my focus is solely on my body and my weight. God wants us to look to Him first. When we delight in Him, He will order our priorities and weight loss will become a natural by-product of seeking Him and learning how to align our hearts with His.
1 Samuel 17:47 NIV – “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
It’s crazy how often I can submit my health journey to the Lord only to take it back. This verse reminds me that this battle is not mine to fight, but His. My job is to keep my mind fixed on Him.
2 Peter 3:9 NIV – “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
This is for anyone like me who grows impatient on this journey. It reminds me of God’s grace and patience with me in my health and in all areas of my life.

Galatians 6:9 – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
What a powerful scripture to keep us encouraged. It reminds us that achieving good health (and every other gift that we have been given) is a process. We will sometimes get tired, get frustrated and want to quit, but we must remain steadfast.
Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the left or to the right, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it’.”
My pastor always used to say, “Stay in your lane”—should I be eating low-carb or maybe I should go vegetarian? It is so easy to look around at what other people are doing and wonder whether we should be doing it too. However, that seldom works. God has given us instructions to follow and we must keep listening for how God is directing us and ignore all the other voices.
Romans 12:1-2 – “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice–the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
What a wonderful reminder that when we take care of our bodies, God sees it as a form of worship. It also reminds us that change is an inside job. We are transformed by changing the way we think about ourselves, the world, our circumstances, and about God. Lastly, when I think of exercise as a form of worship, it completely changes my perspective-—t’s no longer a chore; it’s an offering to God!
1 Corinthians 6:12 – “… all things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”
If we’re not mindful, we can get legalistic and hyper-focused about losing weight. How many calories are in the meal, or how many steps did I get today? It can become all-consuming. But this scripture is a reminder that this journey is not about what you eat or how much you exercise, it’s about learning to live in freedom without being enslaved to anything.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were brought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Much like Romans 12:2, this scripture will change your perspective on how to view your body. Let it remind you of the incredible price that was paid. As you meditate on this scripture, let it remind you that your body is not yours do with as you please. The living God himself lives in us!
2 Timothy 1:7 NLT – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Whether you’re seeking to lose weight, get healthier, or just to have more peace in your life, our first response is to seek God first. It’s in seeking the things of God that we achieve success. Too often, we seek Him after we’ve exhausted all other possibilities. But the Bible is clear, it’s time to reverse our priorities.
So there you have it! These are only 13 but I know there are dozens more and I would like to hear from you.
One of the ladies in the group shared that she has them on her phone and rotates them each month. What a wonderful idea. My other friend also has them taped in her kitchen cupboards and on the dashboard of her car as a reminder. What a wonderful way to bring your thoughts into captivity as the scripture so beautifully reminds us.
